Best Decision of My Life: Taking a Career Break for an Outdoor Adventure

Taking a career break for an outdoor adventure was the best decision of my life. It gave me clarity, confidence, and control over my life in ways I never imagined. To all the hardworking women out there, don’t be afraid to take that leap.

Best Decision of My Life: Taking a Career Break for an Outdoor Adventure

As I sat at my desk at Amazon, immersed in recruitment work that had consumed my life for five years, I often found myself daydreaming about open trails, mountain vistas, and the freedom of the great outdoors. The idea of taking a career break seemed like a fantasy—a distant dream reserved for the lucky few who could afford to leave their jobs and responsibilities behind. But one day, I decided to turn that fantasy into reality, and it was the best decision of my life.

The Fear Factor

Leaving a stable job, especially in a demanding field like recruitment, is daunting. The fear of losing professional momentum, missing out on promotions, and falling behind peers is real. As someone who worked at Amazon, I know these fears all too well. The pressure to constantly perform, stay ahead, and secure the next big opportunity can be overwhelming. The thought of taking a break seems like career suicide. But let me assure you, it’s not.

Addressing the Fears

  1. Career Progression: The fear of stalling your career is valid, but taking a break can actually enhance your career in unexpected ways. Employers value diverse experiences and the resilience gained from stepping out of your comfort zone. A thru-hike or extended outdoor adventure showcases your ability to handle challenges, adapt, and come back with a renewed sense of purpose and clarity.

  2. Financial Concerns: Planning and saving are crucial. Budgeting for your time off can alleviate financial stress. Remember, the investment in yourself will pay dividends in terms of mental well-being and personal growth. Moreover, the time away can lead to innovative ideas and a refreshed perspective that can boost your career upon your return.

  3. Professional Gaps: In today’s world, career gaps are increasingly common and often seen positively if they are used for personal development. Use this time to develop new skills, engage in passion projects, or volunteer. Document your journey and the skills you acquire along the way—this can be a unique selling point when you return to the job market.

The Reality of Internal Promotions

One of the biggest myths in corporate life is that staying loyal to your company guarantees promotions and raises. In reality, internal promotions are often few and far between. According to LinkedIn data, employees who stay in the same company for over two years get paid 50% less than those who switch jobs . Many professionals find that leaving their current employer for a new opportunity can result in a significant salary increase and more rapid career advancement. I experienced this firsthand in the recruitment industry. Despite my dedication and hard work, the opportunities for substantial growth were limited. This realization was a catalyst for my decision to take a sabbatical and pursue my dream adventure—the Pacific Crest Trail.

My Sabbatical: The Pacific Crest Trail Adventure

Taking a career break to hike the Pacific Crest Trail was a bold and somewhat terrifying decision. I had zero backpacking experience prior to this adventure. I traded my corporate attire for hiking boots, my daily meetings for trail maps, and my comfort zone for the unpredictable wilderness.

This journey changed my life in ways I could have never imagined. Each step on the trail brought new challenges and profound insights. The solitude and beauty of nature offered me the clarity and confidence I needed to take control of my life and define what I truly wanted moving forward.

The Reality of Taking a Career Break

Stepping away from a high-pressure job for an outdoor adventure isn’t just about escaping the daily grind—it’s about rediscovering yourself. Here’s what I learned from my journey:

  1. Clarity and Confidence: Being immersed in nature, away from the constant buzz of emails and meetings, gives you the space to think clearly. The challenges you face on a thru-hike—navigating tough terrains, managing limited resources, and pushing your physical limits—translate into greater confidence in your everyday life. You realize that if you can conquer the wilderness, you can tackle any career challenge with renewed vigor.

  2. Mindfulness and Mental Health: Hiking offers unparalleled opportunities for mindfulness. The rhythmic pace of walking, the sound of your breath, and the beauty of the natural world around you ground you in the present moment. This mindfulness is a powerful tool for managing stress and anxiety, equipping you with the mental resilience needed for your professional life.

  3. A Sense of Control: Taking a career break is a bold statement that you are in control of your life. It’s an empowering decision that reaffirms your priorities. You’re not just living to work; you’re working to live a fulfilling life. This perspective shift can transform how you approach your career and personal life, leading to more balanced and meaningful living.

Making the Leap

If you’re a hardworking professional woman considering a career break, I urge you to take the leap. Plan carefully, communicate your intentions to your employer, and embrace the adventure. Whether it’s a thru-hike, a series of shorter hikes, or another form of outdoor exploration, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

Stepping away from my recruitment career to hike the Pacific Crest Trail was the best decision I ever made. It wasn’t easy, but it was transformative. I returned with a clearer mind, a stronger sense of self, and an unshakeable confidence that I can face any challenge life throws at me.

So, if you’re on the fence about taking a career break, consider this your sign. The mountains are calling, and the best version of yourself is waiting to be discovered.
